i mean on the one hand i get what europeans are saying when they get annoyed by americans calling themselves italian or irish etc when they don’t have citizenship to those countries but on the other hand it feels a little deliberately obtuse to act like there’s no good reason to call themselves that rather than the oh so practical and not at all unwieldy “i have a grandparent or great grandparent that immigrated from that country and i was raised in a way that always pulled from that culture, resulting in my culture always being a mix of what is considered default "american” culture and my grandparents’ “foreign” culture and thus being just different enough to not be considered fully “american”“
