Confession: I feel as if it would be more realistic if in Dragon Age 3 we had some exclusively gay and straight romance options. While I understand the appeal in having all the romances bisexual (you can romance who you want regardless of orientation - no one complains), it just doesn’t seem very real to me.
I was a bit surprised that there weren’t exclusively gay or lesbian characters in DA II. I mean, having everybody be Hawke-sexual was nice, I guess, but I dunno. I understand how heartbreaking it may be to find out a character you romance isn’t attracted to the gender you chose for your character, but it’s a bit unrealistic. This is less a matter of “There’s magic and dragons. Suck it up,” and more that it’s unrealistic of people to all be like that. It’d be like having only straight characters. I’m shocked and appalled by the homophobic responses from fans. It’s crazy—how the hell can you be a fan of BioWare games and be homophobic?
Erm, the DAO LIs were PlayerCharactersexual too. Why does no one seem to remember this??
And, as always, I have more bisexual friends than Shepard, Hawke, and the Warden combined. I have had more than four bisexual people interested in dating me, holy shit, all at the same time even!!
So, in conclusion, this “it’s unrealistic” argument needs to go die a really horrible death.
Really.
Not true. Alistair is not into guys and Morrigan is not into girls. Far more realistic than four characters being ridiculously attracted to you.
Alistair had no problem being with my baby-eating blood mage. Why? PlayerCharactersexual.
Morrigan had no problem being with my Chantry-lovin’, kitten savin’ do-gooder. Why? PlayerCharactersexual.
P.S. Fenris shows absolutely no romantic interest in Hawke unless Hawke makes the first move. So, what was that about “unrealistic” and “ridiculously attracted” again?
Stop twisting words to fit your argument—you’re just, rather poorly, arguing semantics. Morrigan is straight, and so is Alistair. You cannot argue against that. The characters doing what you want because you gave them necklaces and statues does not mean they’re sexually attracted you. Also, I’d argue that the first game is ridiculously unrealistic in the fact that you can give somebody a bunch of cake to make up for killing a bunch of innocents or constantly insulting them and cheating on them.
Your argument comes off as being petty because you can’t romance whomever you want in Origins, and that’s not how the real world works. I realize it’s a video game, but there’s a difference between making a game fun and giving the player everything they want with little challenge (I know Fenris is apparently a difficult romance). You don’t considering it unrealistic that only Sebastian, a DLC character (who was raised in a church, no less) is the only straight romanceable character in the game? A 1:4 ratio of straight to ”will bang, regardless of gender” is not realistic in the slightest.
You assume Morrigan and Alistair are straight… just as people assumed Anders was straight. Surprise for them, eh? And why is it, only when the LIs don’t GAF about gender, that “unrealistic” romances are suddenly bad and horrible?
And… have you not paid attention to anything I’ve said? I am a real person. In real life, in my life, all at one singular point in time, six bisexual people were interested in banging me. So no, I don’t think four bisexual people wanting to bang Hawke is unrealistic.
Anders wasn’t even romanceable in Awakening, so that argument is weak, at best. I’d argue that canon Anders is gay, because of Karl, but that’s irrelevant. As for Morrigan and Alistair, unless you can find a way to romance them when you’re their sex, I can’t see how you could be right.
And you’re falsely arguing that me saying something is “unrealistic” means that it’s bad or horrible. Me flying by thought is unrealistic, but it’d be fucking awesome. People arguing that every character should be bi come across as selfish in that they expect every character to be attracted to them—it argues that they should get whatever they want, which is what I’m arguing against.
If there were four bi characters, four straight characters, and four lesbian characters, that’d be more realistic. Mass Effect 3 seemed to have an almost decent mix.
Anders was flirt-able. People assumed he was straight. He is actually pansexual. You couldn’t even flirt with Kaidan in ME1 if you were a male Shepard, people assumed Kaidan was straight, and he’s actually bisexual. You’re assuming Morrigan and Alistair are straight. They may or may not be.
Fenris is bi. He shows no attraction to Hawke unless Hawke makes the first move. I haven’t seen anyone complaining about that. I haven’t seen anyone saying that every character must be instantly, automatically attracted to their character. I have only seen people asking for as many choices in same sex relationships as there are in opposite sex relationships.
It took the ME series, what, nine years to include gay and bisexual men in their LI lineup. And there’s only… two choices. That is not even close to a “decent mix” when compared to the choices of opposite sex relationships.
Wanna argue statistics? How about taking the amount of video games that cater to straight, white males vs the amount of games that cater to LGBTQ or PoC. Give me that and tell me whether or not that’s ‘realistic’. One video game gives 4 of 5 bisexual options, one out of thousands, but the bisexual aspect is more unrealistic than representation of LGBTQ in video games period.
Like seriously, people need to shut the fuck up about this. We get one fucking video game where we can actually have options all around and people complain about statistics and realism. ONE. Video. Game.
So really, fuck that unrealistic bullshit. Video games haven’t been statistically realistic to its audience in decades.
I don’t remember people kicking up this much of a fuss when all of the characters in all video games were straight. But I suppose no LGBT* characters at all is realistic
Best fake interview ever.
There may come a time when I don’t reblog this post but that day is not this day.
If I ever don’t reblog this, its because I’m dead.
